Liquid waste can be a disaster for the environment if it is not handled correctly at every stage. The governments of Canada and Alberta heavily regulate the transportation and disposal of liquid waste. This is done for environmental protection and the safety of residents of the province.
The protocols around how waste must be treated can vary by industry, but in general, you and your liquid waste hauling company should follow these regulations. You can learn more by reading the Alberta Waste Control Regulations from the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act.
Non-Hazardous Waste
While the protocols around non-hazardous waste are not quite as restrictive as they are for hazardous waste, that does not mean you can just dump your liquid waste anywhere you want. Non-hazardous waste cannot be disposed of in any place other than an authorized waste management facility.
Liquid waste hauling companies in Edmonton are certified to deal with any non-hazardous liquid waste you have and can take it to the appropriate management facility.
Hazardous WasteHazardous waste is subject to more restrictions than non-hazardous waste, for obvious reasons. What constitutes a “hazardous waste” is laid out in Schedule 1 of the Alberta Waste Control Regulations.
If your facility produces hazardous waste, you must follow these guidelines:
Storing Hazardous Waste
Storage of hazardous waste while you wait for pickup requires strict adherence to certain regulations. It must be stored in a way that:
1. will not cause an adverse effect
2. any leaks are contained and prevented from entering places beyond the facility, such as sewers or the ground beneath the site
3. has a secondary containment system with no direct connection to the area around the system
4. the waste is properly labelled, stating what material is being stored
5. there is no contact between incompatible hazardous wastes
6. you can perform routine inspections
Hazardous must be secure from unauthorized entry and properly labelled and equipped to handle emergency situations.
Transporting Hazardous Waste
Any company that produces hazardous waste must characterize and classify the materials before consignment for transportation with a liquid waste hauling company in Edmonton. This regulation does not apply if you have an on-site facility for the treatment of hazardous wastes.
Hazardous waste cannot be mixed with other materials to dilute it for the purpose of trying to bypass the regulations laid out, nor can it be divided for that reason.
